The German language doesn’t have the concept of “one” as a pronoun (like in “one does not simply walk into Mordor”). Where “one” is used in English, German usually uses “man” which shares an origin with “Mann” (which translates to English “man”, whoa full circle 😅).Permalink

It’s really hard to avoid using the German “man” when talking about general statements. Replacements could be “wir” (“we”) or “ich” (“I”), though it feels like some intended nuance of the sentence gets lost. Good news! In the last few weeks a nice trend popped up…

Why search for replacements if we could just use the literal translation of the English “one”? Meet the pronoun “eins”! Another member of the ever growing gender-neutral (r)evolution in the German language. It’ll take a while to rewire my brain, but I like the sound already 😊Permalink
